About 190 of Gustave Doré’s illustrations recreated in full colourGustave Doré (1832 - 1883) was a French artist, printmaker, illustrator, painter, caricaturist and sculptor. He was a child prodigy, and by the age of 15 he was already earning his living as a caricaturist for the French paper Le Journal pour rire.He is best known for his prolific output of wood-engravings, especially those illustrating classic books, such as Don Quixote, Dante’s Divine Comedy, and Milton’s Paradise Lost. In his heyday, up to 40 engravers were employed to cut his drawings onto wooden printing blocks. Doré’s role in the creation of the illustrations was normally as designer only; the drawings that he gave to the engravers were often surprisingly sketchy, and many of the images bear the signatures of both Doré and the engraver.Doré’s illustrations were, for the main part, conceived and intended for publication in black-and-white. Over the past few years orrydian has published new editions of the following 13 classic books with Doré’s illustrations sympathetically and expertly recreated in full colour:Blue Beard and other fairy tales, by Michael Richard Hinton (Les Contes de Perrault)Dante’s Divine Comedy: InfernoDante’s Divine Comedy: ParadisoDante’s Divine Comedy: PurgatorioDon Quixote, Volume I, by Miguel de CervantesDon Quixote, Volume II, by Miguel de CervantesGustave Doré’s Bible: The New TestamentGustave Doré’s Bible: The Old TestamentIdylls of the King, by Alfred, Lord TennysonParadise Lost, by John MiltonThe Fables of La FontaineThe Raven, by Edgar Allan PoeThe Rime of the Ancient Mariner, by Samuel Taylor ColeridgeThis volume contains a selection of about 190 full-colour illustrations from these 13 works.www.orrydian.co.uk Read more
